Rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucosa) and nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasal mucosa and pharynx) are usually benign, viral, which evolve into spontaneous healing.
However, they may be the first sign of another infection (p. Ex. Measles, flu) or be complicated by a bacterial infection (p. Ex. Otitis media or sinusitis).
Clinical signs:
– Disposition or nasal obstruction, with or without sore throat, fever, cough, watery eyes; diarrhea in infants.
The presence of purulent nasal discharge does not indicate that there is a bacterial infection.
– In children under 5 years, routinely check the ears
Research otitis media associated.
Treatment:
– Do not administer antibiotics: antibiotic treatment does not speed healing and does not prevent complications.
– Treatment is symptomatic:
• declogging nose by washing with sodium chloride 0.9% 1.
• Fever and sore throat: paracetamol PO for 2 to 3 days.
For a child: place the supine, head to the side, instill 0.9% sodium chloride in each nostril.
